She's a girl - you can't say that about many girls

Sep 27, 10:51 AM by Constible

So I made the horrible mistake of watching a program called “Listed” last night – on MuchMusic. They were counting down to top ten frontmen and women of rock. The women were up first.

Number 10: That woman from Heart. Sure, okay. That crazy wail she threw out in her younger days sets her apart.

Number 9: Iconic. Janis Joplin. But a fear sets in. If Janis Joplin is number 9…

Number 8: JOAN JETT? Joan Jett beats out Janis Joplin? Fine. Fine. It’s all subjective.

The list continued with Chrissie Hynde, Courtney Love, Annie Lennox – not a fan of Love, but I must admit she is one of a kind. Chrissie Hynde and Annie Lennox – well, they are both, to say the least, awesome. And unique.

Then we get to Stevie Nicks. And that’s when the rage set in. Not that I have anything against Stevie Nicks. I would never slander Dawn’s idol. What infuriated me was one of the talking heads – a radio personality – who said, (and I’m paraphrasing here) “Stevie Nicks had such a unique voice. And you can’t say that about many girls.”

WHAT?

What about the rest of the women on your fucking Listed list?

Are you telling me that if you put Janis Joplin, Chrissie Hynde and Annie Lennox in a vocal line up, you wouldn’t be able to tell them apart?

And the ones who came after Nicks – Gwen Stefani, Tina Turner, Debbie Harry? Are they indistiguishable from one another?

Isn’t one of the constants of this list (with the exception of Joan Jett) the fact that they all have incredibly unique styles?

We (myself and the Captain) quickly realized that the show needed to find a way to compartmentalize each performer, and so they were each assigned one trait that they all shared. Debbie Harry, for example, owned the stage when she performed. Unlike the rest of these wallflowers.

It was the unique voice comment that grated me the most, however. To suggest that being unique was a rarity in women – when, according to this list, being unique was quite common. Okay, that might be a bit of mobius strip thinking, but you know what I mean. I just don’t see why, in order to “celebrate” a woman’s individualism, you must also suggest said individualism is an aberration.

Ah, well. Shouldn’t let it get to me. That radio personality is an idiot. And you can’t say that about many radio personalities.

The Apes Have It

Sep 7, 02:47 PM by Tanner

Chris, I’m with you. This newfangled “system” in addition to being slightly complicated to “learn”, is – more importantly – just not us. I’m currently working on the only thing that will ever make anybody interested in this site ever again.

Yes. A pornbot.
No. The Sketch-O-Matic.

I’m getting close. Consider this temporary log an “experiment”. I just about wrote a “failed” experiment, but then I remembered that experiments don’t “succeed” or “fail”, they just provide us with information. And now we know some new things.

Things about this failed experiment.

And, no Chris, Fripah-dee-doo-dah man though I may be, I have no intention of ever killing the old log. As much as I may act as though rltc.ca were my own private domain, I am really nothing more than a caretaker here. A caretaker in an abandoned building that the owners hate and ignore and treat like something worse than their own vile shittings. Only a caretaker.

When We Were Apes

Sep 7, 11:59 AM by Read

Last night I discovered our old blog still floating in the cyber-ether – and what a beautiful thing it was/is.

http://spaceape.freeshell.org/etc….archive=rllog_arch_1.txt

There it be. Don’t kill this, Tanner. You fripadee doo-dah man.

I don’t mean to be impertinent – but I kind of like the old log better. I don’t get how to do this one. But maybe I’m stupid. Well, I am stupid – but let’s be nice about it.

I can’t figure out how to respond to someone’s post as troupe member Chris Read. How do I do that, Uncle Tanney?

Thank Christ! Seriously, thanks, Christ.

I think we’re all on the same page when it comes to needing an audience – in that nothing is worth anything unless it is followed by applause. It’s the reason why I’ve always been a mite reluctant to get on board the Rapture Train. I mean, what’s the point of hoovering up to heaven, if the mudpuppets on earth don’t know about it?

Finally, someone has found a solution.
